Many smartphones made today are really good. Awesome camera, great battery (mostly), superb performance…but to be one of the very BEST? Yeah, that takes something really special. Here are some of the Best phones ever made. Also, not ALL of the greatest phones will make it to this list. Enjoy!
Phones on this list won’t be “the fastest” or “the prettiest”. Most phones here are because they had a huge impact on the phone industry, or just brought some new elements that other companies err…”borrowed”. Or, they are still valuable today, years after being released.
Best phones ever made – Motorola Dynatac 8000x
You can call this the father, grandfather, great grandfather of mobile phones, because this is the very first mobile phone ever made. First on sale in 1983, it had a rather big price tag – around $4000. However, despite this, the Motorola Dynatac 8000x was a huge success for Motorola. The phone was big. Really big. It was around 25 cm tall, and weighted around 750g. For the little memory it had, you were able to store 30 contacts, and with it’s battery, you were able to get 30 minutes of talk time, or 10 hours of standby time. Today, this phone has a high value for people who collect old phones.
I think it’s safe to say that Apple really did re-invent the phone with their original iPhone. Phones before the iPhone were a big mishmash. Poor OSes, shady keyboards, bad app support…and those with a touch screen depended on a stylus. That did mostly work, but Apple decided to use “the best stylus – the finger”. So they ditched the stylus. It’s safe to say that the original iPhone was a major game changer, since every major company started to develop and make phone much like the iPhone. Sure, the original iPhone wasn’t perfect, but it did massively change the phone industry. Oh, and if want to learn about the history of iOS, click here.
The Nokia 808 was just a regular Nokia phone released in mid 2012. It had an average screen, average specs, Nokia’s build quality…but what really made it stand out from the crowd was it’s 41 MP camera. Yes, I think you surely remember this one. 41 MP camera! With this phone, Nokia raised the photography bar on mobile phones, and kept it there for a very, very long time. The same camera was carried over to the Lumia 1020, which I really like. Sure, the 808 wasn’t a perfect phone, but everyone wanted to try it because of it’s ludicrous camera. However, camera technology has evolved quite a lot since 2012, and a modern 12-16 MP camera can easily compete with the Nokia 808. Still, for 2012, it was waaaay ahead of it’s time.
Best phones ever made – HTC Dream
Stepping over to Android territory, we have the HTC Dream. This phone was very, very important. It was the FIRST phone to run Google’s OS – Android. You can call this phone the grandfather of all android phones today. It ran Android 1.6. It featured a quite small 3.2″ screen, a 528 MHz CPU and 192 MB of RAM. Quite slow… Still, if it wasn’t for the HTC Dream, who knows what would have happened. It also featured a decent physical keyboard. If you’re interested in Android’s history, click here.
This phone is what set the DROID in Android phones. For it’s time, it was rather powerful. It featured a dual-core Cortex A9 clocked at 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. When new, it came with Android 2.3.5, but it received official updates all the way to Android 4.1, and even after that, it received many unofficial updates. The camera on this phone is also quite good. All this was packed in a sexy design, that featured a physical keyboard, kinda like the HTC Dream. Oh, and it was also a great overclocker. You were able to overclock it just enough so it can cope with the newer OSes. Some users pushed it to 1.4 GHz.
Do I really need to say anything? Now, this more refers to the 3300 series, but the 3310 is the most popular. And you probably know why…build quality. The Nokia 3310 in phones is something like old Volvos are in cars. They just keep on going, no matter what. You can drop the phone, hit it, throw it, hit it again…it will just laugh at you. This is mainly because of it’s compact design. It was even somewhat customizable, since you are able to swap out the back and front plastic plate for different colored ones. Features? Well… you get a calendar, a screen saver, some games, an alarm clock…oh, and a wicked battery life. My grandfather still uses a Nokia 3310.
Best phones ever made – Nokia N95
Just like my previous list, this list is also heavily populated with Nokia phones, mainly because Nokia made a lot of phones. A LOT. The Nokia N95 will go down as one of the best they have made. It had it all. A 5 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics (really good considering the phone came out in 2007), 64 MB of RAM, Nokia build quality, and was one of the first phones ever to have a GPS navigation built-in. However, this phone was left in the shadow of the iPhone, which was released at about the same time. A simpler phone and a brand new iPhone OS attracted many users and left the Nokia 95 in the shadow.
Stepping back to Android territory, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of Samsung’s best selling phone. There are some variants of the Galaxy S3, but a quad-core 1.4 GHz CPU and 1.5 GB of RAM is still more than enough for today’s standard. You can officially upgrade the Samsung Galaxy S3 to Android KitKat 4.4.4, but there are many unofficial mods for this device that keep it alive. Right now, you can install a modded version of Android 6 from XDA developer’s form to this device.
